Reading Between the Lines
How Our Brains Read and Understand Language
Organisation: Arludo
Target Audience: General Audience

Did you know that language can be broken down into it’s smallest units of meaning called Morphemes. These units are what the brain takes in and builds more complex understandings when we listen and read. But what happens if the units are in different languages like Chinese and Spanish? Meet Elisabetta de Simone, a dedicated researcher exploring how our brains process different written languages such as French, German, and Italian. We worked hard to develop a fun animation that would breathe life into Elisabetta’s research.
Like us you might ask what can we do with the knowledge of what happens in our brain as it processes written language? Well, hopefully this animation sheds some light. Elisabetta explains in the animation that this intriguing research on language helps us comprehend how skilled readers recognise and process words. Her research can help significantly to improve teaching strategies for children learning to read and customising them to the specific language of the text.
We wanted to make sure this animation was as diverse and colourful as the languages it was representing. We gave each of the characters a unique appearance with a big dose of colour. We designed language as a flow of letters that lights up different parts of the brain as it passes through indicating how different words might influence brain activity. We loved creating this fun and bright animation - we hope you love to watch it.
