Save Our Catchment Virtual Excursion brings to life the challenge of keeping river riparian zones healthy

Protecting Our Waterways

We teamed up with NSW Education to bring Save Our Catchment to life—an interactive virtual excursion exploring invasive species in Australian riparian zones. Filmed on Bundjalung Country, this 12-part video series follows the impact of Cats Claw Creeper in the Upper Clarence River Catchment, connecting geography, science, and sustainability through real-world investigations.

Project Overview

Our Role

  • Organisation: NSW Department of Education

  • Target Audience: School Children

  • Platforms: Department Website

Save Our Catchment is an interactive educational series designed to support the Stage 5 Australian Geography curriculum through high-quality video and digital resources. This virtual excursion features twelve video lessons and a workbook guiding students through an investigation of invasive pest species affecting Australian riparian zones.

Filmed on Bundjalung Country, the series explores the mid-north coast of NSW’s Upper Clarence River Catchment, where learners examine the environmental challenges posed by invasive species. Each video is designed to integrate with classroom and field-based learning activities, connecting geography with Stage 5 Science and encouraging students to engage with real-world environmental issues. Cross-curriculum priorities—including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures and Sustainability—provide opportunities for flipped classroom practices and hands-on inquiry.

Binky Films was engaged to film, edit, and post-produce the series. We aimed to create an engaging and immersive educational experience, by combining storytelling with scientific investigation. The videos bring the impact of pest species to life, highlighting their effects on biodiversity, waterways, and ecosystems. Custom motion graphics and animations were developed to visually explain ecological interactions, environmental management strategies, and the spread of invasive species, making complex concepts accessible to students.

A key focus of the series was to film a hands-on study of the Cats Claw Creeper in the Upper Clarence Catchment, providing a model for students to replicate in their own local creeks or streams. Through our collaboration with the educational experts, the series transforms a critical environmental issue into an engaging, interactive, and educational journey—empowering students to explore solutions for protecting Australia's waterways in their own areas.
