Rebuilding Momonoura

In the wake of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the village of Momonoura faced a profound challenge—how to rebuild while preserving its identity. We partnered with RIDe to create this documentary, exploring the community’s journey of recovery, resilience, and the delicate balance between tradition and modern development.

Project Overview

  • Organisation: RIDe Architectural Research Organisation

  • Target Audience: General Audience

  • Platforms: Open Agenda Exhibition

We are proud to have collaborated with the architectural research group RIDe to create this short documentary.

Through the medium of the film, this project aims to investigate the driving forces behind the redevelopment of Momonoura, a rural Japanese village on the Oshika Peninsula which experienced the catastrophic effects of the 2011 Tohoku Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami. Before the disaster, those living in Momonoura were economically and historically dependent on the local aquaculture industry. In the wake of the tsunami, residents are considering the reconstruction of the village in the context of local identity and traditions versus external, global influences.

Binkyfilms was engaged in providing filming and editing services. The project involved travelling to Japan and Tasmania to conduct interviews and the post-production of editing the film together. The project's culmination was a winner of the Open Agenda competition, and their annual exhibition showcased the film.
